The Montafon in the south of Vorarlberg

Where tradition meets sporty adventures …

Traditions and adventure. Sporty action and tranquillity in nature. It’s the combination that makes the Montafon the top holiday destination in Vorarlberg – in every season.

39 kilometres long, traversed by the river Ill, surrounded by the Rätikon, Verwall and Silvretta mountain ranges. That’s right! We’re talking about the Montafon in Vorarlberg. It’s the southernmost valley of the westernmost federal state in Austria and encompasses 11 villages in 8 municipalities. One of them is Gaschurn where Sporthotel Silvretta Montafon is located.

Montafon’s traditions from “Alpabtrieb” to “Sura Kees”

Did you know that people in the Montafon were speaking Rhaetian up to the 15th century? That’s also where the valley’s Rhaeto-Romanic name comes from – its original meaning is still not fully known. Maybe it means “mountain in front” or “foothill” from “mont davon”. Or maybe it comes from “munt tovun” which means something like “mountain full of holes” or “pitted mountain”. One thing is for sure, though: The impressive mountains have always defined the landscape and the various traditions in the southernmost valley of Vorarlberg.

The “Alpabtrieb”, for instance, is one such tradition: Cattle are ceremoniously guided down from the mountain pastures in autumn – a procedure which festively concludes the farmers’ year of work. The mountains are also home to the frugal alpine “Steinschaf”, a rare breed of sheep. The “Maisäß” – mountain pastures with small settlements and barns – as a traditional form of land use still exist to this day as well.

Culinary tip with a long-standing tradition: the Montafon’s “Sura Kees” – a mildly aromatic skimmed milk cheese! It tastes particularly great at the rustic Stoba 7
